The 2003 edition showcases the work of the following master smiths: Pavel Tasovsky (Czech Republic), Oskar Hafen (Germany), Jaroslav Kaspar (Czech Republic), Josef Bzdok (Germany), Hans Klasmeier (Germany), Thomas Gustav Kenngott (Germany), Olavi Osara (Finland), Claudio Bottero (Italy), Poldi Habermann (Czech Republic).
Following is a paragraph from the Preface of the 2003 annual: “In this yearbook we have three Czechs in one go. This small nation in the heart of Europe has the reputation of liking experiments. The Czech blacksmiths and metal designers are known to be inspiring and master craftsmen, which is further underlined by the fact that the Italian Claudio Bottero (featured in this annual) did part of his training in the Czech Republic. The Finn, Olavi Osara has a different approach. At the Design Academy of Mynamaki, which he decisively influenced and built up, new modern design solutions are sought not only through crafts, but also through market analysis, design studies, and idea development. There are no new ideas without experiments.
The nine metal designers in this book show openly what ideas they have – even if they risk being copied by the design industry”.
The International Metal Design Annuals from 1999 through the current year are available from Artisan either individually or as a specially priced set.
