DESCRIPTION

Understanding Basic Electricity is a concise, interesting, and clearly written book which explains electricity to readers who don’t have a technical background. All examples and situations discussed are related to the home. This book is intended for all persons, from curious young teens to adults who want to have a better understanding of this important power source. Irwin Math’s book gives the ordinary person without a technical background a general idea of what electricity is, how it is produced, how we use and measure it, as well as the dangers involved with its misuse.

A previous technical understanding of electricity is absolutely not necessary, and the book does not contain any complicated mathematics. Only one simple easy-to-understand formula is provided — no more!!  The information given will also allow the lay person to begin to understand and even troubleshoot faulty devices, make simple repairs (often saving money in the process) and approach electricity with the respect it deserves.

By carefully reading Understanding Basic Electricity, one will not only attain a good basic knowledge of electricity but be able to talk to an electrician, when necessary, knowing and understanding pretty much what he or she is explaining.

READER REVIEWS

“A well written and illustrated basic book on electricity that should help anyone understand how it works and how to address practical applications and basic repairs in the household.
Irwin Math does an exceptional job in laying out the basics and uncomplicating for what most might would consider a daunting task handling electrical concerns and challenges. His descriptions along with good illustrations will be helpful to anyone seeking the hows and wherefores in everyday household electronics.
Most importantly he cautions repeatedly about the need to be fully safe when dealing with these electrical matters. Numerous people are killed each year through miscalculating how deadly electricity can be if not handled properly. This topic alone is certainly priceless.
I was so impressed that I immediately ran out and purchased my own digital voltmeter to assist with putting what I learned into practical use. He concludes the book with basic repair and troubleshooting instructions and a handy appendix for quick reference. A good book that every household should possess”.  knightlight777 | Nov 26, 2023 |
“Wow! Where was this book in science class?!? It’s an easy to understand, non-technical explanation of electricity”.– kung_pow_kitty | Nov 1, 2023 |

(This book) accomplishes its mission of educating the non-technical reader in the basics of electricity. Accessible language but not dumbed-down, useful chapter summaries, detailed colored illustrations. A very useful introduction for middle-school on up through adulthood. – IrinaR | Nov 16, 2023

“Every homeowner should have a copy. It explains electrical basics, Ohm’s law, and how to do basic maintenance. It will help you decide if you can fix something yourself or call for help (usually call!). When you do call an Electrician, this will help you explain your problem in a coherent and useful manner.
The book is short and sweet, great for any age, useful no matter what level of expertise one has. It would make a great housewarming gift and be equally useful to a kid in high school industrial arts. It may look like a children’s book, but don’t let its small size and colorful cover fool you – this little book is full of real power”! mickeycat | Dec 1, 2023

“As someone who understood absolutely zero about electricity prior to reading this book, I have to say I’m very impressed with its ability to explain the subject without alienating its audience (laypeople such as myself). It’s done a fine job of teaching me about a topic I have always been intimidated by”!LalenaMaximus | Dec 1, 2023 |

“This is a very basic, fundamental book, and it’s really helpful to get a grasp of the concepts without being overwhelmed. I dimly remember learning all of this in high school physics, and this was a good refresher. It’s presented in clear, easy to understand format and language with illustrations and tables. There is also a chapter on how to do basic electrical troubleshooting and repairs. I definitely could see this as part of a series on basic science concepts”.Alex Janusch | Nov 26, 2023
“This book is a great primer on the basics of electricity and invites the reader to more confidently prepare themselves for any basic home electrical repairs. I learned a good bit from reading through this, and think it will make most people who “know nothing” feel more confident going foward”. –  awesame | Nov 25, 2023
“Very interesting. The concepts were presented in an understandable manner that made sense. A great read for those wishing to learn more about electricity and retain the logic behind the concepts”. – TexasBaron | Nov 15, 2023 |
“Great little introduction to electricity. Cuts to the chase, easy-to-follow and understand. Highly recommended for folks that never studied it or just curious about how to simply explain it”.  E. Thorelli | Nov 17, 2023 |
“This book is an awesome introduction to somebody that’s uninitiated with electricity and want to get into the subject. Things are well explained and in a easy manner. Would definitely recommend for anyone interested in the topic”.Meilech P | Nov 19, 2023
“This book delivers pretty much exactly what the title promises. It’s main focus is to equip the average homeowner with the knowledge and ability to do some simple troubleshooting, talk intelligently with an electrician, and maybe do some simple repairs. I think it succeeds admirably in its aims
Unfortunately I was hoping for something a little more in depth, but I suppose it’s impossibly hard to walk that fine line between being “non-technical” and “for everyone” on the one hand, and as in depth as I’d like on the other hand. I did learn quite a bit, especially about the correct way to use a digital multi-meter”. – Foretopman | Nov 20, 2023 |
“I work in the library at a public high school, this is a perfect addition to our non-fiction section. The book delivers on it’s title and offers a basic introduction to electricity without overwhelming a curious reader. I am happy to add this book to our physical science collection :)”.
