Description
Basic Knifemaking Super Saver #1 (3 Knifemaking DVD set):
Tools for the Knifemaker with Walter Sorrells
One of the most daunting tasks faced by beginning knifemakers is the question of what tools to buy. This one hour and twenty-five minute video takes the guesswork out of building up your shop.
All of the most important knifemaking tools are featured here — from simple hand tools to expensive power equipment. The DVD includes strategies for buying new and used tools, hints about where each tool can be purchased, and what you can expect to pay for them.
The video is carefully structured to lead you from building a reasonably priced bare-bones knife making shop, all the way through the kind of “fantasy tools” owned by professional knifemakers.
In the video, Walter Sorrells lays out four shops — one composed entirely of cheap hand tools that can be pulled together for around a hundred bucks, another aimed at more advanced stock removal knifemakers, a third which details the tools you’ll need if you want to get into forging blades with a hammer and anvil, and a fourth containing more expensive and advanced professional tools.
While a lot of this content has been posted on Youtube, the DVD contains bonus material not available on-line and all the material is carefully organized so that you can make sense of what you’ll need and what you won’t at whatever stage of the knife-making game you find yourself.
The video is shot entirely in Hi-Def, and – like all of Walter’s videos — includes tons of close-ups and action shots.
Length: 1 hour and 25 minutes.
Primitive Backyard Bladesmithing with Tobin Nieto
Tobin Nieto has been forging in the primitive aesthetic and style since 2002. A student of the neo tribal metalsmith philosophy, he seeks to do much of the work with minimal tooling. He is also a champion from the History Channel’s show Forged in Fire. Mr. Nieto is currently teaching his method of forging in San Antonio, Texas.
If you want to start forging knives with minimal tools and cost, then this video is for you. Tobin has gas forges, tongs, grinders, and anvils, but does he use them in this video? No! What he does use are tools and supplies that can be picked up at your local scrap yard, thrift shop, and big-box store.
In this video, Tobin forges one of his primitive style knives from an old car spring, and he finishes it off with a cord wrapped handle.
Total Run Time: 2 hours 6 minutes.
